Which Home Dry Cleaning Kit is Best?

Woolite by The Secret of Dry Cleaner

What it’s costing:

There are enough towelettes for one box ($11 at Duane Reade) to clean 24 garments at 46 per item.

Clothes:
A button-down shirt for men with a sweat ring around the collar and cuff stains; a silk shell for women.

What Involves:

When dabbing with the towelette, pretreat stains, then place the towelette and clothes on medium heat in the dryer for twenty minutes.

The Outcomes:

The Woolite refreshed muzzled fabric, but when we put the items in the dryer, like the collar sweat, anything visible was still there when we took them out. Wrinkles have been relaxed but not abolished.

15 Minute Dry Cleaner Bounce

What it’s costing:

There are enough dryer cloths in one box ($10 at Bed Bath & Beyond) to clean 32 cloths at 31 per item.

Clothes:

A men’s dress shirt with soiled cuffs; a deodorant-residue cotton-blend dress.

What Involves:

By blotting with the cloth, pretreat stains, then on medium heat dry the cloth and clothing for fifteen minutes.

The Outcomes:

The cloth stood up nicely to a light smell, but could not knock out deeper-set smells (a day in the office) (a night on the dance floor). It also failed to remove the residue of cuff soil and deodorant and was hardly wrinkle-free when soft.

Starter Kit Dryel In-Dryer

What it’s costing:

One box ($9 at Walgreens) has a bag, two dry cloths, and enough spray for $1.12 per item to clean eight clothes.

Clothes:

A men’s button-down shirt with a sweat ring and a lipstick stain around the collar; a delicate linen shirt.

What Involves:

Use the cleaning spray to spot-treat stains, then place the clothes and a dryer cloth in the reusable, zippered bag and dry over medium heat for 30 minutes.

The Outcomes:

The garment bag did an admirable job of protecting the clothes, which smelled as if in some faraway meadow they had been line-dried. The sweat on the collar faded a bit, but the lipstick didn’t come out. Ironing continues to be a must.

The Verdict: Bounce and Woolite were beaten out by Dryel, but only by a small margin. A professional dry cleaner was trumped by none of the kits.
