Thor: Love and Thunder — Everything We Know So Far

Marvel Studios’ God of Thunder will do what no Marvel Cinematic Universe character has done and return for a fourth episode of its solo series when Thor: Love and Thunder hits theaters on February 11, 2022.

Set written and directed by T.aika Waititi, the filmmaker who wrote and directed Thor: Ragnarok, Thor: Love and thunder will bring back Chris Hemsworth as Thor, along with many other familiar faces from the MCU. Here’s everything we know about Thor so far: love and thunder.

Bale the God Butcher

At Disney 2020 Investor Day, the studio confirmed previous reports that Christian Bale had joined the cast. And they told us who he was playing: Gorr the God Butcher.

Who is Gorr? Gorr grew up on a nameless, barren planet and lost faith in the gods after the death of his family. He became an outcast from his tribe. When he discovered the existence of gods, he vowed to kill them all, including Thor, Odinson. Gorr is supported by All-Black the Necrosword, a mystical weapon that allows users to fly at extreme speed and fight with extreme strength. In the comics, the sword is the catalyst that sends Gorr on a massive heavenly rampage and turns him against Thor.

Thor and Gorr meet several times during the comics, often with time travel and Gorr’s army of berserkers. Still no word on how exactly Gorr is woven into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Guardians return

Given that Thor spent so much time with the Guardians of the Galaxy in Avengers: Infinity War, it was fair to wonder if we could see another crossover in Thor: Love and Thunder. And while we can’t speak for the whole gang, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed in November that at least Star-Lord would be returning in the upcoming movie. In an Instagram post in December, Pom Klementieff revealed she was filming Thor: Love and Thunder in Sydney and repeating her role as Mantis.

The last time we saw them, Thor and the Guardians left Earth together in Avengers: Endgame, so it’s possible that Thor: Love and Thunder will pick up right where Endgame left off. Only time can tell.

Filming in January

Chris Hemsworth tells Thor: Love and Thunder will start filming in January 2021.

Chris Hemsworth said he was filming Thor: Love and Thunder in January and that he was very excited to do something different. He also said that Taika Waititi is writing the script!

Release date

When the coronavirus forced cinemas to shut down, Disney delayed several films and forced the MCU to change the release date. Ultimately, this led to Doctor Strange being encountered in the Multiverse of Madness on March 2022 and bringing it to theaters after Thor: Love and Thunder, which eventually got a new release date of February 11, 2022.

The film will follow a number of new heroes who star in their own films: Black Widow, The Eternals, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. It now precedes Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Black Panther 2 and Captain Marvel 2.

Loki, Silver Surfer and… Iron Man?

Taika Waititi hosted a live-watch-along event for Thor: Ragnarok on Thursday (aka “Thor’s Day”) on Instagram. In addition to virtual visits by Ragnarok actors Tessa Thompson and Mark Ruffalo, the session also included some interesting details provided by the filmmaker.

While Waititi would neither confirm nor deny the presence of rumored actor Christian Bale or the possible return of Tom Hiddleston as Loki, he stated that contrary to recent rumors, one character will definitely not appear in the film: the well-known cosmic hero as Silver Surfer.

Waititi described Thor: Love and Thunder as “like 10-year-olds told us what to do in a movie and we said yes to every single thing.”

The event eventually turned into an impromptu question-and-answer session with Waititi, and the filmmaker prank viewers with a joke script from Thor: Love and Thunder.

The script revealed the return of Tony Stark – with “science” being the only explanation for his resurrection – and left him with the line “Wazzuuuuurrp!” The fake script also indicated that Thanos was back and the team in Thor: Love and Thunder would be renamed “The Avengererers”.

While this fake script was a lot of fun talking to the BBC, Waititi described the actual script for Thor: Love & Thunder as “crazy” and “romantic”.

“I think it’s going to be really good,” he said. “We’re done, we’ve been writing the script back and forth for over a year, and I’m just doing another pass this week. It’s so crazy and very romantic too. I like romances now. I just want to have a romance. I want to do something that I have never done or cared for. I would like to attack something like that. “

While Stark is unlikely to come back from the dead to fall in love with Thor, another insane romance might be up for grabs.

From Gotham to Asgard

In early January, an unconfirmed report revealed that Batman himself, Christian Bale, was the leading contender to play a key, unidentified role in Thor: Love and Thunder.

That report was later confirmed by Marvel actress Tessa Thompson, who pointed out that Bale was actually in talks to play the villain in Thor: Love and Thunder.

Finally, during Disney’s massive Investor Day 2020 content news dump, Bale was confirmed to be playing Gorr the God Butcher.

The god himself?

In one of the biggest announcements from Marvel’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con, the studio revealed that actress Natalie Portman will not only repeat her role as Jane Foster in Love and Thunder, but will also become a new female Thor.

Portman made a surprise appearance on stage during the event to announce her return to the role – a character she hasn’t starred since Thor: The Dark World in 2013.

How Portman’s new god of thunder will be incorporated into the MCU remains a mystery that is already causing a stir.

Portman spoke to Serena Williams on Instagram Live in July and expressed her excitement for repeating the role. “She is indeed the mighty Thor. The comics had the female Thor when Jane becomes Thor and she is the mighty Thor, ”she said. “We haven’t started yet [filming]. More time to be jacked up. What I don’t have. I have the carbo shop down, but not the exercise part! Obviously everything is weird because of the pandemic, who knows what’s going on. It’s going to be exciting and I’m curious to see if I can build muscle. “

While Portman is back, she’ll likely be the only major cast member from the two early Thor films. Speaking to ET, Kat Dennings, who played Darcy in the first two films, said she wasn’t asked to return for Thor: Love and Thunder. “I don’t think I’ll be there,” she said. “I feel like I’ve heard it by now.”

Asgarden gather

Although Hemsworth is expected to repeat his role as Thor, he won’t be the only prominent Asgardian to appear in the film.

Tessa Thompson, who made her debut as Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok (see above) and re-played the role in Avengers: Endgame, will also return to play a key role in Love and Thunder.

The film is supposed to show Valkyrie’s search for a partner to rule Asgard next to him after he got the throne in Endgame. Valkyrie becomes the first official LGBTQIA + character in the MCU.

Behind the camera

For Marvel fans, Waititi’s return as a director is welcome news. THOR: RagnarokThor’s third solo adventure wowed audiences with his unique blend of humor and action and his colorful Jack Kirby-inspired production design. THOR: Ragnarok earned $ 854 million at the global box office, paving the way for Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, in which the beer-eating, bulbous “Bro Thor” quickly became a fan favorite.

Taika Waititi Akira

Waititi’s Thor Encore comes with at least one sacrifice. Warner Bros. ‘ Live action against AkiraKatsuhiro Otomo’s seminal manga and anime film has been put on hold. Previously, Waititi was supposed to lead the customization, but delays due to scripting issues have been compounded AkiraThe production date is too close to Love and Thunderand forces Waititi to leave the project.

Love and thunder isn’t the only big project on Waititi’s plate either. The small picture adaptation by Waititi What we do in the shadows, which Waititi both produces and occasionally directs, has already been extended for a second season. Waititi will also direct an episode of the Disney + Star Wars spin-off The Mandalorianand will play one of his supporting characters, the assassin droid IG-11.

The history

We last saw Thor at the end of Avengers: EndgameWhen the god of thunder went into space alongside the guardians of the galaxy with his shiny new ax in hand. It is currently unclear whether the highly anticipated Asgardians of the Galaxy team will continue or whether Thor and the Guardians will go their separate ways for their respective sequels.

Previous reports suggest that Thor: Love and Thunder could actually shift its focus to the characters surrounding Hemsworth’s Thor, with Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) inheriting the “Mighty Thor” coat and Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) acting as ruler of Asgard.

Correction. Her name is Mighty Thor.

– Taika Waititi (@TaikaWaititi) July 21, 2019

Even so, Thor is poised to play an important role as one of the few Founding Avengers still standing in the fourth phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After Tony Stark and Black Widow disappeared, the Hulk was injured, and both Captain America and Hawkeye retired, it’s up to Thor to fill the gap between the old-school MCU members and newcomers like the Eternals and Shang-Chi shut down.
