With so many people around the world still experiencing some kind of lockdown or order at home, boredom becomes a very real thing. Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu cues are exhausted and people are running out of things. It seems that many are returning to the age-old hobby of reading!

According to Publisher’s WeeklySales of printing books rose by 8.2% in 2020! When schools closed in the spring, there was an immediate impact on both non-fiction books for young people and fiction titles. However, children weren’t the only audiences turning to reading in 2020. Adult literature and political titles also saw sales decline.

The mortal instruments The series comprises six books and follows Clary Fray on her journey into the world of shadow hunters. Clary’s mother goes missing around the time Clary learns supernatural powers. Only the Shadowhunters can explain what is happening to her, and only the Shadowhunters can help Clary get her mother back.

Set in New York City, the series features all kinds of otherworldly creatures including vampires, werewolves, fairies, and superhuman shadowhunter creatures. While the series focuses on Clary’s quest for the truth about who she really is, The mortal instruments became a popular series for studying human relationships.

Popular for its LGBTQ representation and strong female lead. If you haven’t read these books yet, we highly recommend that you do so! The mortal instruments was also converted into a movie and an episodic television series.

The Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead

The Vampire Academy series is another series that includes six books. Rose Hathaway is a half vampire, half human whose mission is to protect Lissa Dragomir. Lissa differs from Rose in that she is a vampire princess who is also a king. Lissa has many enemies determined to rob her of her mortal vampire status.

The first book takes place in a school for vampire beings, as the title suggests. The young vampires get caught up in all kinds of juvenile gadgets, but there is also plenty of room for very adult situations.

If you are into fearful romance, then The Vampire Academy series is for you. Rose falls in love with her a lot of older mentor, Dimitri. The two dance around each other for a while before giving in to temptation. What follows is a forbidden romance.

The Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas.

The first book in this series was published in 2012 and completed a few years later in 2018 with the eighth book. The series follows eighteen-year-old Celaena Sardothien, an assassin in the Kingdom of Adarlan. The Crown Prince of Dorian asks Celaena if she would like to compete against other assassins and thieves in a competition that will earn them the right to serve as the king’s champion.

This appeals to Celaena because she has already spent a year in a slave prison. If she manages to get the King’s Champion title, the position will eventually lead to her freedom. She accepts the opportunity.

Celaena develops a relationship with Chaol, who is described as tall and handsome. He is the captain of the watch and very good friends with Dorian. The three get caught up in all sorts of trouble, including a massive conspiracy that threatens all of their safety. Many battles follow.

The series appeared on the New York Times bestseller list and was recently selected by Hulu for a television adaptation.

American gods by Neil Gaiman

Described as a mix of Americana, fantasy and mythology, American gods is the story of Shadow. After he was released from prison, he received news that his wife had died in a car accident a few days before his release.

On his way home from prison, Shadow meets Mr. Wednesday. Mr. Wednesday tells Shadow that he is a refugee, a former god, and the King of America. They mate and embark on a journey across the United States that can only be described as anything but normal.

Coined to be an examination of the heart and soul of America American gods is considered by critics to be Gaiman’s best work.

The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien

This fantasy novel for children, published in 1937, is now considered an ancient classic. The story follows Bilbo Baggins on his journey to find part of the treasure guarded by Smaug the dragon. Bilbo gets his treasure in the end, but he doesn’t keep everything to himself. Regardless, the hobbit moves away from the whole experience of a rich man.

The story is told as an episodic quest. Each chapter introduces a new creature or geographic environment. Commended for his focus on personal growth, heroism, and creative analysis of warfare, The Hobbit has been adapted for screen, stage and radio. Customizations for video games and board games were also made.

The wheel of time series by Robert Jordan

This high fantasy series was originally intended to be just a six-book series. At its completion The wheel of time includes fourteen novels. In addition, a prequel and two accompanying novels were published.

Jordan died while he was writing the final installment, but he left extensive notes for someone else to fill out for him. Fantasy writer Brandon Sanderson was hired to finalize the story, but it was deemed too long to be published. The final episode was subsequently split into three novels, the last of which was published in 2013.

The story has roots in both European and Asian mythology. The wheel of time is highly praised for its uniquely imaginative world and meticulously developed magical theory. Each of the books in The wheel of time made it to number one of the New York Times bestseller list when they were released.

The wheel of time series has sold over 80 million copies worldwide.
