Spider-Man 3: Everything We Know About the Upcoming Sequel

Although Sony’s 2002 film Spider-Man played a significant role in bringing superhero cinema into the mainstream, the studio’s subsequent releases with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield haven’t quite caught on. After growing to its own dizzying heights, Marvel eventually negotiated to bring Spider-Man into its own cinematic universe and cast Tom Holland as Peter Parker. With two hugely successful films, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home, Sony and Marvel have shown that good gaming can pay off.

The two studios are already working intensively on the as yet unnamed third Spider-Man film, which is due to be released on December 17, 2021. Here is everything we know about the upcoming movie, including rumors of one of the most significant crossover events in MCU history.

Warning: This post contains spoilers about the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

First set the footage

The first set of footage and photos have appeared on the Internet. Clips from Tom Holland and Zendaya film a winter scene and a wall dedicated to Mysterio-related propaganda.

We’re pulling this up because The Illuminerdi reports that both Willem Dafoe and Thomas Hayden Church will repeat their roles as Norman Osborn / The Green Goblin and Flint Mark / The Sandman in Marvel’s upcoming Spider-Man.

That brings the currently reported balance sheet from the Raimi trilogy: Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, Alfred Molina, Dafoe and Hayden Church.

The Amazing trilogy is said to be with: Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone and Jamie Foxx.

Production is running

Originally slated to start production in Atlanta in July, the Dreiquel was delayed by the coronavirus pandemic. In October 2020, star Tom Holland shared an Instagram story where he arrived on set and officially signaled that production was underway. In fact, he was kind enough to post a public announcement from the set:

The occupation

The casting rumor mill on Spider-Man 3 is almost constantly on the move. What we definitely know is that Tom Holland will return as Peter Parker and Zendaya as MJ. Likewise, Jacob Batalon has confirmed that he will repeat his role as Peter’s lovable best friend, Ned, and Deadline reports that Tony Revolori will return as Flash Thompson – although Sony has not yet confirmed it. It’s also likely safe to assume that Marisa Tomei will be back as Peter’s Aunt May.

As with many MCU films, Spider-Man 3 will have a superhero team. Benedict Cumberbatch will repeat his MCU role as Doctor Strange, who will likely take on the role of Peter’s mentor after Tony Stark’s death in Avengers: Endgame.

Biggest news, however, is that villains from Sony’s two previous franchises are joining the MCU. The Hollywood Reporter announced in October 2020 that Jamie Foxx is repeating his role as Electro from The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Alfred Molina is also back as Doctor Octopus, whom he played in Spider-Man 2 in 2004.

Those auditions, and the widespread, unconfirmed rumors that Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, Kirsten Dunst and Emma Stone might repeat their roles from Sony’s previous Spider-Man films, have sparked speculation that the upcoming film will address the theme of Multiverse (or possibly the vicious Sinister Six).

Take the rumors with a grain of salt, however, as Sony’s only comment so far on these latter castings is, “These rumored castings are not confirmed.” However, Marvel President Kevin Feige was less cagey when asked to confirm the casting rumors. “The biggest clue is the title of the second Doctor Strange film,” he said. “That is the greatest clue as to where the multiverse of insanity is leading us and how we are exploring it.” It sounds like the multiverse definitely plays a role in Spider-Man 3.

That didn’t stop the rumors from spinning, as more recently Charlie Cox is said to have replayed his role as Daredevil from the Netflix series in the upcoming film.

The release date

The currently unnamed project, informally known as Spider-Man 3, is slated to hit theaters on December 17, 2021. However, this date has already been postponed several times due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the theater industry. The last date change was on November 5, 2021 after Black Widow was delayed and Avatar 2 was postponed by a year.

Much depends on the global situation by the end of 2021. Sony CEO Tony Vinciquerra announces that the third Spider-Man will only be released in cinemas that are “open and have significant capacity”.

The plot

Neither Marvel nor Sony have released anything official about the plot of the third Spider-Man movie. But that hasn’t stopped the internet from setting itself on fire with speculation. However, Tom Holland told the Inquirer that the upcoming film is “absolutely insane”.

Eerie six

Based on the casting news published, it certainly seems headed towards madness.

The Far From Home post-credits scene left Peter in a terrible place: Outed as Spider-Man by Mysterio and J. Jonah Jameson. Given that Mysterio is a master of illusion, it is entirely possible that he is still alive, which leaves open the possibility that the Sinister Six will play a role in the upcoming film. After the casting of Electro and Doc Ock, that rumor only gained momentum.

Even so, there is nothing official and no one can say exactly how all of these rumors and confirmed auditions will eventually grow together.
