OnePlus Co-founder Carl Pei Launches Nothing. No, Really

OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei has announced his next company, and it’s nothing. No, we’re not belittling Pei’s announcement – Nothing is the name of Pei’s new consumer technology company. The inspiration for this unusual name can be found on the company’s Twitter page, which says on its profile that “technology should take a back seat and feel like nothing”.

Pei himself has fun with the name Nothing. An hour before the announcement, Pei wrote the following on his own Twitter account: “We couldn’t announce anything in the end, let’s see …”, followed by a laughing emoji. We expect a lot of similar pun gimmicks, especially when the company launches its first products.

What won’t produce anything? Its not clear yet. Despite Pei’s background on smartphones, there’s no suggestion that nothing will make phones too. The press release states that “its first smart devices will be released in the first half of this year”. Smart devices can really mean anything from smart home products to wearables and headphones to healthcare technology.

While this is the only hint we got from the official announcement, there was a rumor that the brand would focus on audio hardware, but this has not been confirmed. Pei shares the company’s mission. However, this gives a glimpse into the approach to its products:

“It’s been a while since something interesting happened in technology. It’s time for a breath of fresh air. Nothing is there to break down barriers between humans and technology to create a seamless digital future. We believe that the best technology is beautiful, but natural and intuitive to use. “

Pei announced that he would be leaving OnePlus in October 2020 and said he would take some time off before starting his new project. He founded the company in 2013 with Pete Lau and was instrumental in developing the company’s products and image. Between the announcement of his departure and now, Pei raised $ 7 million from various investors (names include Twitch co-founder Kevin Lin, Paddy Cosgrave of Web Summit, and YouTuber Casey Neistat) to start Nothing.

OnePlus has built an incredible community in a surprisingly short time and regularly brings well-made, exciting and desirable products to the market, so that every company becomes a remarkable company under Pei’s guidance.
