Facebook Reportedly Has a Clubhouse Clone in Its Sights
Facebook is known to love using features on competing platforms to stay relevant. The latest target is reportedly the voice-based social network Clubhouse, which has caused a stir in some circles, although in a long beta phase it is still an invitation-only platform.
Social networking giant Facebook is building “an audio chat product similar to Clubhouse,” which is “in its earliest stages of development,” according to two insiders who shared information with the New York Times this week.
For the stranger, Clubhouse is an iOS app that allows people to gather in audio chat rooms where they can discuss a range of topics. They also experiment with things like celebrity talk shows, networking events, and theatrical performances. The app, which was launched in April 2020, currently has around two million users per week and was developed by Paul Davison and Rohan Seth of Alpha Exploration Co. of Salt Lake City.
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, has already tried Clubhouse himself and made a surprise appearance in one of its virtual rooms last week to talk about augmented reality and virtual reality technology. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk also helped put Clubhouse further into the spotlight when he showed up a week earlier.
In response to a request from the New York Times about her report, Facebook spokeswoman Emilie Haskell, although she did not fully deny adding clubhouse-like features to her service, did not refuse endorsement, simply saying, “We have connected people use Audio and video technologies have been around for many years and are constantly looking for new ways to improve that experience for people. “
Facebook has not been shy in the past to take advantage of the best features of other social apps. Therefore, there is every chance a clubhouse clone will land on its platform before the end of the year. For example, Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, took over Stories from Snapchat in 2016 before adding TikTok-like roles in 2020. Efforts don’t always work out, however, due to the closure of the Flipboard-like standalone paper app in 2015 just a year after it launched.
Twitter has already jumped on the clubhouse train with Spaces, which it tested in December 2020.
