Apple Customers Spent Record Amount on Apps on New Year’s Day

With the ongoing pandemic that kept many people at home during the year-end vacation, Apple device owners opened their wallets and spent a record $ 540 million on the company’s App Store on New Years Day alone.

App Store sales of digital goods and services reached a whopping $ 1.8 billion for the week between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, the tech giant said on Wednesday. The turnover is mainly due to the expenditure for games.

“As the world navigated in an ever-changing new normal of virtual learning, grocery delivery, and drive-by birthday celebrations, customers turned to Apple services in new ways, turning to expertly curated apps, news, music, Podcasts, TV shows, movies and more to keep you entertained, informed, connected and fit, “Apple said in a message announcing the record spending.

The company said the video conferencing service Zoom and the on-demand video subscription service Disney + were among the most downloaded apps of 2020. Both services took on customers as the pandemic changed people’s daily habits.

Popular game downloads, according to Apple, have included Among Us and Roblox.

“In a year like no other, apps are more important than ever. Developers have found new ways to keep people connected, help them study and work from home, stay fit and healthy, and provide much-needed entertainment, “the iPhone maker said, adding that Developers who sell through the App Store have now made more than $ 200 billion since the online store opened in 2008.

Many of the apps will have landed on Apple’s newest iPhone 12, which launched late last year. All eyes are now on January 27, when Apple’s latest financial results – from September to December 2020 – show how well the new phone has sold.
